Patrons are invited to a Christmas Exposition where Mercantile Departments glow with fairyland lights and Dickens quotations. Fifteen Dickens Booths offer holiday gifts at low prices, including Booth 4 Men’s Opera Slippers and Booth 5 silk Neck Mufflers at regular prices.
Elsie Schroter 18 and Esther 20 faced two burglars in their Jamaica Plain dwelling. Elsie wrestled a male intruder at the back door while Esther retrieved a revolver, the pair escaping after window breakage and a brief struggle. Police say the men appeared non professional. The assailants were a 23-year-old man with a smooth face and a second, lighter intruder.
At a Delaware to New Jersey grade crossing a train struck a stage carrying Worthen and Aldrich mill workers from Delaware. Twenty injured, three fatally likely, among them Crane Moran Swenkie and many others severely hurt. Ambulances and doctors responded from Passaic.
Inspectors Knox and Douglass raid major shops since Sunday catching numerous shoplifters. Arrests include Jane Rogers of Somerville for a $5 parasol, Alvira Fields of Everett for shoplifting and pocket picking, Charlotte Grinnell of Waltham found with over $25 in goods, and Lizzie Donovan of Newton accused of stealing a leather bag. Several suspects, including Mary Ann Woods of Malden, await court action.
A woman dressed in a long seal ape outfit was charged with the larceny of rings and stick pins valued at seven dollars. She cried, claiming her husband could lose his job because of her actions, and said she took the items due to poverty.
David E. Davis and Fred Moorong of 88 Green Street were arrested last evening and charged with larceny of a suit of clothes and a razor from Fred Scheeherle of 8 Green Street on the 20th inst.
Lynn December 22. Political foes of License Commissioner Herrick will not press charges now. They fear Supreme Court would overturn any removal decree by Mayor Ramsdell. Herrick vows to fight on, knowing a Supreme Court hearing could spark as much scandal as Lexow probe and halt proceedings.
