Two Men Killed and Injured in Brighton Railroad Tragedy
Two men walking along the Boston and Albany tracks in Brighton were struck by an outward bound train. One died instantly and lay at City Hospital morgue, the other severely injured and unconscious with brain concussion. The dead man was identified as Charles Gavin of Watertown by a letter found on him. Gavin, 29, unmarried, son of Thomas Gavin, a longtime Newton real estate figure, and connected with coal business and St. Patrick's Church.

Coleman, dying of consumption, received a pardon as he lay on an iron bed unable to rise. He had been sentenced to Salem jail last January for highway robbery and was to serve three years. The pardon came after a physician's prognosis of a short remaining life. Coleman was taken to his home on Harris Street in Peabody.
Explosion at Chelsea Gas Works Sends Flame Skyward
An 9 20 P M alarm reported a fire at Chelsea Gas Company works. A tongue of flame lit the night sky over Boston waterside and ferries. The purifier room explosion ignited eighteen retorts, burning roof sections. About two hours later the fire was controlled with $2000 loss, uninsured.

Born in Ireland January 1 178? he left Ireland for St John then New York, lost his family at sea, later remarried Mary McDonald and had four children.
