Petition for an injunction over New Hampshire legislature roll
In Belknap county at Laconia this afternoon the Democrats in the House filed a petition asking the court to stop Clerk Stephen Jewett from adding conditional names to the 1891 House roll and to deny any further or different relief. The petition names Harry Bingham Grafton county FE B. S. Sanborn Merrimac county George F. Hodgdon Rockingham county John B. Nash Carroll county Ira Whitcher Haverhill and M. M. Stevens Lisbon as complainants who say they were elected to the 1891 House and seek to prevent the use of a contested roll in organizing the body. They argue the clerk will act as clerk of the preceding House and violate General Laws Chapter 35 and related statutes by inserting names from towns or wards not entitled under law and based on an 1890 census or other disputed basis. Two petitions request a mandamus to place their names on the 1891 roll. Copies were given to Clerk Jewett and a hearing time was sought before Chief Justice Doe at Dover.
