Born on the Maumee battlegrounds, the soldier rose from a 17 year old sergeant in the Ninth Indiana to captain, lieutenant colonel, and major in the regular army. His career spanned Shiloh to Chickamauga, Apache campaigns, the Spanish American War, and the Philippines where he died leading his command. He learned tactics from the Indians and fought under Bragg, Rosecrans, and Mackenzie before his death in action.
