Lawton Killed Near San Mateo Luzon
War Department confirms General Lawton was killed near San Mateo in Luzon while driving insurgents from the San Mateo area northeast of Manila. He was killed instantly at 9 39 yesterday morning, a great loss to the country and to the army directed by OTIS.

A Soldier’s Life Across Wars From Maumee to the Philippines
Born on the Maumee battlegrounds, the soldier rose from a 17 year old sergeant in the Ninth Indiana to captain, lieutenant colonel, and major in the regular army. His career spanned Shiloh to Chickamauga, Apache campaigns, the Spanish American War, and the Philippines where he died leading his command. He learned tactics from the Indians and fought under Bragg, Rosecrans, and Mackenzie before his death in action.
