The report details a fogbound maritime accident as the steamer Plymouth runs aground off Rikers Island with about 600 aboard. The ship sustains a five foot hole, listing and taking on water, while salvage plans and towing to pier are considered.
Captain John I. Quigley of the combination wagon No. 6 in Dorchester was demoted after a hearing before Fire Commissioner Russell following a complaint by Ladderman Dooley of Grove Hall. Dooley alleged liquor problems at the wagon house. Quigley had previously commanded the unit and earned an excellent fire record.
The steamer Manhasset en route from New London to Greenport and other Long Island ports ran aground on Shelter Island north shore crossing Peconic Bay amid thick fog. Passengers and freight were removed by a Greenport crew. Captain James Smith led the operation. The vessel rested easily and was expected to float at high tide tomorrow morning.
The Hon. William J. Bryan of Austin Texas letters the Massachusetts Democratic State committee saying he will be in Boston early in January. He hopes to talk to Massachusetts Democrats and urges harmony. He may be accompanied by Lentz Jones Morgan Richardson Sulzer for a large reception and legislative discussions.
A man who gave the name George Bradford of Boston died after being crushed between a cab and an elevated railway pillar at Third Avenue and Fourteenth Street. He was entangled for forty minutes before rescue. He remained unconscious and was in critical condition at a hospital.
Chairman Hanna of the Republican National Committee has appointed Perry Heath Charles G Dawes and Senator Shoup to a committee on the distribution of literature as authorized by the national committee.
Co Robert Sheeley of No 7 Goldsmith Place reports two young men robbed him of a pocketbook containing eight dollars on Albany Street near Saaron Street at 9 45 oclock last night.
The mayor says he retired from Broadway National Bank over a year ago and believes the bank may pay depositors in full if losses from Squire paper do not exceed capital. He expresses confidence in Boston’s financial resilience, notes mining securities losses were contained, and warns on international market effects. Continued on page 6.
