Spree Ashore: German Steamer Stranded Off Isle of Wight
The German steamer Spree, from New York for Bremen, ran aground on Warden Ledge near Yarmouth two miles west of the Isle of Wight. Despite five tugs, high tides failed to lift her. pilots, mails, and specie were brought ashore, and passengers reassured there is no danger though she may remain stranded for about two weeks.

A Thursday evening harbor collision left the small French steamer Pro Patria badly damaged by a coal barge in tow of the New York tug D. 8. Arnott. The blow opened a fifteen by six foot hole near the pilot house and bent iron frames, with multiple dents to the port side. Repairs are to be done by Atlantic Works, and the ship will be moved to the wharf and on the railway within about ten days.
