Miners Dead in Tennessee Mine Explosion

Twenty four miners died at the Nelson mine entry No. 10 near Dayton Tennessee after a fire damp explosion followed by a roof collapse. Rescue teams worked all day with fresh crews as they anticipated days needed to force open the fallen wall and recover the victims amid foul air and crowding grief of relatives at the drift mouth. The mine’s ventilation was shut by the cave in, sealing the doomed miners inside.

Armenian Minister Killed and Kurdish Brigand Captured

A United Press dispatch from Constantinople dated December 19 reports the murder of Rev. Sir Agnanian a well known Baptist figure in the United States and the burning of his church in Arabkir. It also states that Moussa Bey the Kurdish brigand of Bitlis has been captured at Bagdad. Boston Mission leaders deny ever hearing of Agnanian.

Chelsea Men Plunge From Ferry Narrowly Survive

John J. Connolly and James Duval of Chelsea slipped from the 7:45 Chelsea ferry deck, fell overboard, and were rescued by ferryhouse workers and harbor police. They were taken to Station 8, cared for until dry, then sent home. Connolly, 45, of 25 Spruce Street, and Duval, 32, of 78 Poplar Street.

Philadelphia December 21 The surface road strike ends with workers voting to return to service. President Welsh on behalf of the traction company pledges to address and redress their grievances upon return to work.

Torpedoes Tested At Howell Station In Newport

Today Lieutenant Grand of His Majesty's forces visited the Howell torpedo testing station at Tiverton and witnessed two shots. One 17.72 inch torpedo and one 14 inch torpedo performed perfectly. The British representative appeared pleased with the American production. The larger torpedo had recently been fired before Commodore Sampson and was developed by the Hotchkiss people. Lieutenant Grand witnessed the exhibition by order of the admiralty and will report findings.
