Police anticipate two more arrests in the Collateral Loan Company thefts. A Back Bay woman and a suspected employee are expected to account for a $28 000 shortage. The woman's arrest may identify the employee and reveal how the funds were spent.
Boston business men split on the rail freight rate increase granted to 125 East railroads by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Public Service Commission officials doubt material benefit to New England lines while Howard Elliott of the New Haven forecasts only modest gains in freight earnings under current traffic levels.
Howard M. Biscoe of Boston and Albany argues the proposal will not affect New England business. James H. Hustis of Boston and Maine says revenue gains may top 250000 dollars, under 1 percent of freight earnings. Mayor James M. Curley contends the measure could boost railroad and national prosperity and benefit Boston. safety upgrades could be funded.
Stormy hearings end as Rep Gardner of Massachusetts presses for a vote on data he submitted about military unpreparedness. His demand angers Rep Witherspoon of Mississippi, who suddenly quits the committee room.

Reserve Officer O'Neill interrupts an early morning break in at 270 Columbia Road Dorchester. Two men opened fire forcing a chase through Dorchester streets. one suspect fled toward Boston as the other escaped. It is unclear if any wounded. The men may be the pair who escaped Plymouth jail earlier last evening in a stolen team.
In New City on December 18 the jury watched a dramatic courtroom scene as Anna Cleary Newman, widow of Eugene M. Newman, was brought in to testify for her father William V. Cleary, the longtime Haverstraw town clerk, in his murder trial.
A 20 year old girl, wearing black with a white shirtwaist and a white feather, was helped to the witness chair by her uncle. She reached her father, who had not seen her since July 22, the day before Newman was shot as he waited to tell Cleary he and Anna were married.
A false fire alarm rang Somerville last night after a salamander drying plaster sent smoke from a house under construction at Walter and Bradley streets. The "four round" box 342 sounded 146 blows due to a crossed wire, with 16 repeats before the fault was found. The two extra blasts for all out completed the total.
Former Was loan company head William Cobb appeared in Superior Criminal Court on 18 counts of larceny and unlawful lending seeking $59,000 in losses. He pleaded not guilty and posted $25,000 bail. Investigators also target a jewel red pledge scheme tied to a romance involving a company employee.

Charles S. Eaton proprietor of Thompson s Spa files for divorce citing cruelty by Ella F Bartlett Eaton. They wed July 4 1899 in Marblehead and lived there and in Pasadena with Eaton maintaining a large estate in California. The couple are described as wealthy with Eaton worth several millions and the marriage kept secret until 1999.
British and Allied forces press along the Belgian coast while Germans retreat in France and Flanders. Attacks near La Bassee Arras fail with heavy French losses. German advances in Argonne capture prisoners as pursuit of Russians continues in Poland. Verdun artillery hits German batteries. Austria-Hungary reports a 250 mile battle front. News despatches show no major eastern breakthroughs.
