Record cargoes of coal in the harbor
More than 43,000 tons of coal arrived in Boston Harbor yesterday totaling 43,146 tons the largest since the strike ended. The mix included 13,418 tons of anthracite in barges and 2,006 tons on schooners plus 27,704 tons of soft coal. Prices ranged from 10 to 18 dollars per ton, with shortages feared during Christmas to New Year. A new distribution plan reduced lines at the North End coal yard while express wagons carried 10 cent deliveries, crowds of shoppers and busy wharfs described by reporters.
