Mrs J B Whittredge narrowly escaped death when her carriage and an electric car collided on Boylston street. Read in Brunswick apartments she rests, bruised but conscious. Spring Hill car struck the coupe. Humphrey Sullivan hurled from wreck, thought dead, later found only slightly hurt.
Hosea Morrill Knowlton 55 former Massachusetts attorney general died at his Marion summer home after a December 16 apoplexy. A New Bedford native, Tufts and Harvard Law graduate, he rose from local practice to two terms in the Legislature, district attorney for the southern district, and finally attorney general in 1893. Known for decisive cross examination, he led a busy legal career in criminal, commercial and admiralty law. He leaves a wife and seven children and was active in church, education and business boards.
Washington flags the allied plan to blockade Venezuela ports as a de facto war action. Bowen named sole arbitrator, with powers to settle claims against Venezuela, but the allies demand U S guarantees to pay awards. Dewey fleet orders issued. ships to Trinidad for possible use. Germany and France show calm. Italy seeks peaceful settlement. Caracas cites evidence linking actions to the Matos revolt and weapons shipments.
Woburn reports that President Edward F. Brady and Alderman C. B. Cummings were found by a special committee to have fully sustained bribery charges related to a street railroad franchise. Alderman Greaney’s charges were sustained, while Alderman Aylward and Patrick Lynch were not proven. Cummings may withdraw petitions, Brady to be reimbursed for investigation costs, and a district attorney referral planned. Total city costs cited range from 1500 to 2000 dollars, with Brady's expenses estimated at 1000 to 1200.
In a tense council session the $802,000 bill failed by one vote, the Mayor's bill was defeated by seven, a $534,000 measure lost by 16, then the old $777,009 bill was passed by three votes. President Dolan led opposition to the Mayor amid lobby sway and adjournment chaos.
R C Whayne of Louisville was found fatally shot near Jacob Park with a $340,000 life policy and pending applications for $50,000 more. Coroner Kelly ordered an exhaustive probe. the inquiry will be held Saturday. A rifle with one barrel empty and the other cocked lay near the body as relatives favor accidental death.
Mrs. Julia Ryan, a Brookline widow with several children, was badly burned when her dress brushed glowing ashes at a Brookline avenue dump. As flames engulfed her clothing, onlookers froze until Joseph O'Neil halted the blaze by pulling off the burning garments. Mrs. Ryan was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with potentially fatal burns.
Winsome Agnes Converse known as the queen of cold hand girls was arrested October 22 for stealing $200 in a North Eind hotel. Her bail was jumped after her father bailed her out, a default warrant was issued, and Patrolman Martin F Leonard located her in a Hanover street museum. She is jailed in Charles street.
William Goodey of London met a stranger in a West End saloon who offered his watch for double its value. The man fled with the timepiece but after two hours Goodey reported to Patrolman Fisher and the suspect Thomas O'Donnell was arrested with the watch found on him.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair conditions Friday and Saturday with warmer temperatures on Saturday. Fresh west to southwest winds are expected, bringing a milder weekend outlook for the region.

John F. Daley was stabbed on Tremont Street by a stranger who then carried him toward Emergency Hospital after misidentifying him as his target. Daley escaped the attack with three cuts near the temple and says the assailant fled after pleading a mistaken target. Police from Division 4 are investigating.
Mary Thomas of 129 Hemenway street told Station 16 last evening a snatch thief robbed her chatelaine bag containing $6 and other valuables at the corner of Blackwood and St Botolph streets. She described the thief as a short thick set man wearing a dark overcoat and a black derby hat.
Coroner Bill ordered the arrest of Mrs. Sarah Manson after an inquest into the death of Mrs. Julia A. Wilson in Willimantic Connecticut. Mrs. Wilson died last Saturday amid suspicions of poisoning.
