Raiders from Kaiser's navy raid British towns Scarborough Hartlepool and Whitby shelling three towns with heavy damage. Seventy six injured and seven soldiers killed as shells drop near an army post. Britain struggles to fend off the bold raid with desperate fleet efforts.
Forty of the Emden's crew left on Cocos Island capture a collier and mount two Maxims aboard. They are raid ing commerce in the Pacific after Sydney forced the Emden ashore earlier.
The British steamer Malacca reports Emden men went ashore on Cocos Island to dismantle Wireless and fled but could not rejoin their ship when Sydney arrived. The German party under Lieutenant von Muecke left with a commandeered schooner and armed launch plus two boats with provisions. Malacca steamed to Jolo without lights at night.
John Callahan a 42 year old resident of 1 Riverside Street Roxbury attempted self harm last night in view of his wife and children. He returned home at 8 55 PM and used a razor to cut his throat. He is feared dead.
Dr Winfield Smith a renowned New England surgeon died at his Brookline home aged 53. He had been ill for three months and the cause was listed as overwork.
Dr. Smith born in Chatham son of Jacob and Eliza J. Smith. He studied at English High School and Boston University School of Medicine graduating in 1888. He became a professor of surgery at Boston University Medical School and led Massachusetts Homeopathic Medical Society and Massachusetts Surgical Gynecological Society. Survived by widow Mrs Gertrude Canterbury Smith.
German forces drive toward Warsaw after a major engagement in northern Poland. Russian reports say a retreat near Sochaczew, 20 miles from Warsaw, while German centre under Hindenberg pushes from Lowisz toward the capital. A large southward Austrian force faces a forthcoming battle near Cracow.
The war office says at 8 am three enemy ships appeared off Hartlepool, with two battle cruisers and one armored cruiser. Fire was returned, seven killed and 14 wounded among troops, 22 killed and 50 wounded in West Hartlepool, and damage to gas works. Similar actions occurred at Scarborough and Whitby with casualties and property damage, but no panic among civilians.
