Coal Famine Grips Mangum Area as Rail Confiscates Coal
In Mangum Oklahoma on December 16 a coal shortage rages with exhausted supplies in Mangum and Granite. Farmers burn fences and out-buildings as fuel runs out. Coal in transit is seized by the railroad and relief seems unlikely. About fifty farmers traveled to the Rock Island station to seize the sole coal car. If relief fails, public works will close and many families will suffer.
