Confession ties police HQ clerk’s thefts to Boston links

Matthew Nickerson claims Lawrence Rogers, once an elevator man at police headquarters, supplied counterfeit coins and other goods including opium and gambling paraphernalia taken by officers. Rogers is jailed for robbing the property clerk’s stores. Nickerson disputes the drowned man in a Hotel Lorene incident, identifying him as Tom Ferris with aliases Owen Hagan and Whitey Ferris. A Boston woman, Agnes Murray, allegedly corresponded with Ferris. Boston authorities are asked to investigate the tale.

Tennessee Chief Justice shoots Colonel Beasley in office

Chattanooga reports that Chief Justice David S. Snodgrass of the Tennessee Supreme Court shot Colonel John R. Beasley at noon in the Brown and Spurlock law office. Two shots were fired, one hitting Beasley in the left arm and causing a flesh wound. The incident stemmed from a lengthy story in the newspapers.

Senate debate on alien exclusion and post office fines

Washington December 16 senators debated bills banning aliens from public jobs and querying Postmaster General fines on employees for errors. A resolution sought authority for prohibiting staff from urging legislation in their favor. A separate bill barred aliens on reservations from hunting or fishing outside allowed limits, citing Bannock case tensions. Senate adjourned until tomorrow.

House Debates Rules Amendments and Interior Delays

In Washington on Dec 16 the House adopted an order to consider amendments to Rules 10 and 11 concerning committees. Rep. Flynn of Oklahoma proposed a resolution demanding info from the Secretary of the Interior on delays opening the Wichita and affiliated lands reservation in Oklahoma and alleged relatives of Secretary Smith profit from the delay. Flynn claimed a contract offered $200 to hinder approval. Rep. Cooper defended Smith. Flynn pressed for redress, noting failed attempts to contact the President and Secretary Smith. The session also advanced resolutions on alien law penalties for false sworn statements and pushing nonpartisan voting with labor measures. Several bills were introduced including reimbursements for unclaimed military property, a Quincy public building, militia pensions, train wrecking penalties by death, silver coinage, and re-enactment of McKinley tariff schedules.
