London dispatch reports General Buller attempting to force the Tugela River to relieve Ladysmith. His column was driven back with heavy casualties and eleven guns abandoned after fierce Boers fire. The retreat followed a brave stand with the force unable to withstand the assault.
The assignee claims assets totaling 5 808 000 with liabilities of 5 000 000 against John P Squire Co and affiliates led by Heman W Chaplin. Major creditors are national banks including Globe Bank, with many New England lenders. A creditors meeting will be arranged to seek a plan to straighten affairs while business continues. Details appear on page 9.
Moody's condition shows marked improvement as he rests comfortably in East Northfield. Doctors deny Bright's disease, attributing kidney trouble to heart weakness and noting symptoms are favorable tonight.
