Petrograd reports the central powers peace proposal is seen as an attempt to shift blame for the war onto the Entente. The Russian foreign office issues a formal statement through the Petrograd News Agency rejecting the proposal and urging public understanding of the war's continuation.
Washington dispatch reports the German embassy stating that if belligerents meet to discuss peace terms the key topic would be universal disarmament. Germany insists any peace must include limits on armament, arguing a peace without drastic reductions would be worthless.
Twenty six members of the US submarine H-3 crew, trapped since dawn after the submersible ran ashore on a Humboldt Bay shoal, were rescued tonight. Five men reached shore by breeches buoy at five o clock, and within an hour the remaining nineteen crew members and two officers were saved.
In a fog off the coast the H-3 grounded on a sand spit while en route from Puget Sound to Mare Island. The Cheyenne and submarines H-1 and H-2 assisted. Five crew members were saved by breeches buoy as the wounded ship steadied in surf.
Copenhagen reports yesterday plebiscite favored selling the Danish West Indies to the United States with 283000 votes for and 157000 against the proposed sale. The tally was released via London shortly after polls closed.
Thirteen families totaling over 50 people were driven from their homes as a blaze tore through the Warren Supply Company store at 311 Warren Street Roxbury. Firemen Captain M. J. Teehan and hoseman James Nolan of Engine 24 Roxbury were overcome by smoke during the effort.
