East Boston man George A Gardner shot himself at Holy Cross Cemetery Malden after grieving his mother and brother who also killed themselves within 15 months. A rose and a clipped poem lay with the second brother Henry J Gardner as a dying testament to their loss. The pistol fell from the hand holding the verse.
Four of the Powhatan crew were injured when the Merchants and Miners liner Powhatan collided with the Jamestown outward bound from Norfolk to New York. The Powhatan, carrying 14 passengers, was beached on Thimble Shoal to prevent sinking.
