During Mme Sembrich recital, Signora Rotoli refused to remove a white plume hat despite an usher’s insistence. Signor Rotoli defended his wife amid applause as the episode prompted the head usher to intervene. The program featured works from Lotti to Tschaikowsky with Brahms songs and an extra finale drawing a large crowd.

Pringle Restored as License Commissioner in Gloucester

In Gloucester on December 14 James R. Pringle is restored to the license commissioner post after a court rule ousts Thomas J. Carroll, reversing the July ex parte removal by Mayor George E. Merchant. The rivals had clashed for months.

Substitute subsidy bill proposed in Senate

Senator Allen of Nebraska introduced a substitute for the ship subsidy bill to shield agricultural staples and American exports. The plan would pay bounties on wheat flour rye corn cotton hops and tobacco with duties varying by product and calls for abrogation of treaties opposing the measure. The Senate met mostly in secret over the Hay Pauncefote treaty with only a brief open session approving a holiday recess from December 21 to January 3.

Skeleton Found Hidden in St Paul Hull Five Years After Launch

In Skein New York on December 14 a mechanic vanished the day the liner St Paul was launched from Cramp shipyards on the Delaware. Now his skeleton is found in a ballast compartment of the hull, his cries unheard during the five years aboard.

Ella Ingraham Recovers After Suicide Attempt

Relatives in North Adams receive word from City Hospital that Ella Ingraham will leave the institution in a few days after a failed self harm attempt in Boston. The Savoy native will be cared for by a cousin who plans to travel to Boston. Her child will be brought home by relatives. both parents are deceased.

Swallow considers chairmanship amid party plans

Republican George N. Swallow told a Post reporter that with six aldermen and 31 councilmen the GOP should secure a city post such as city clerk or Board of Aldermen president. He hinted his successor might enable a party shift, and noted Wheeler’s fate could affect his own bid. Swallow’s term as chairman ends January 1, and he expects Mayor Hart to seek re-election.

Trustees seek injunction over Worcester church dispute

North Brookfield December 14. Alexander Parmenter and trustees with Rev J E Berger of St Anne s Church left for Worcester to seek a temporary injunction to stop old trustees from closing the church or interfering with church property until the court rules. Judge Hardy urged submission to a master. Willis E Sibley pressed as master, with filing expected by early February. Father Berger supporters hail a victory.
