Boston plans an opera house and a top symphony orchestra to make the city the global musical center. Officials promise international operatic standards and a peerless orchestra, forecasting unparalleled prestige and cultural leadership.
Henry Russell of the San Carlo opera company confirms Boston plans a new 750000 theatre devoted to grand opera. Located on Hunting ton avenue near the New England Conservatory and Symphony Hall, the house will be funded by a wealthy patron. Plans are drawn and spring construction hoped. the Conservatory and prominent local backers will support the project. It will seat about 2500 with two tiers of boxes.
General Funston, after meetings with Goldfield residents, says conditions are worse than expected and additional trouble could follow mine owners and miners clashes. He adds regular troops patrolling mines and streets may be necessary. withdrawal of troops is vetoed.
Yale names Dorian Hooker the author of Mother of Men the prize song after a decade long search. The committee includes Rev Anson Phelps Stokes Jr Professor Edward Reed Professor Harry Jep son and W L Carter with Seth Bingham credited for the music adaptation to the two stanzas.
In Rome today, the Pope met Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco to discuss the Catholic situation in the United States and specifically in the San Francisco diocese. The appointment of the Rev. Edward Hanna of Rochester as coadjutor archbishop of San Francisco was also on the agenda.

Mayor Walter C. Wardwell leads challenger James F. Aylward by 144 votes in Cambridge as official counts rise beyond the earlier 24. No recount has been held yet, but the margin has expanded in the tally.
Frederick W. Wist reports being duped out of 2096 dollars last night by an unknown woman he met in a cafe. She allegedly escorted him to a West End hotel before the theft. Wist, of 62 North Hilton Street Malden, filed the complaint with Joy Street police station.
Mrs. Cornelius Cahill reports 28 Rhode Island hens burned by acid at her Oakland road henhouse last Sunday. She found 10 dead and 16 badly burned, saying a noise was heard about 4 AM. A prior incident damaged her cow, leading to its sale. Police seek the culprit.
William Bliss longtime president of the Boston and Albany Railroad died at 25 Exeter Street after a short illness. Born December 11, 1834 in Springfield he was 78. Bliss joined railroading in 1865 rising to general manager then president in 1880 and retired from active work in 1901.
Frank C. Aiken of Keene New Hampshire was found intoxicated on Bowdoin square with money protruding from his pockets. Patrolman Connery detained him at Joy street station where $910 was found in his possession.
Hibbard declares no honest man will be ousted and pledges a non partisan administration. He will protect honest labor, remove workers drawing pay without labor, refuse Republican meetings for two years, and seek cooperation from citizens and business groups to benefit Boston. He urges all good citizens to ensure he keeps his pledges.
Mayor-elect George A. Hibbard spoke before the Boston City Club pledging a nonpartisan two year administration. He warned officials that he would not be interfered with and vowed to uphold honesty, punish dishonesty, and remove any worker not earning pay.

Priests assisted at the eighth and ninth floors with last rites as the blaze was finally controlled from neighboring streams.
In San Francisco on December 13 a whale fought six hours to free itself from the knot line and rotator swallowed by the schooner J. M. Weatherwax. The monster from Eureka suffered even greater agony as knots were reeled off in its alimentary canal and it died.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for snow or rain Saturday with a slowly rising temperature. Sunday expected rain, then fair, with easterly to southerly winds increasing. Northeast winds on the south coast noted for Sunday.
In New York on December 13, after days of talks among Kelley McGraw and Barney Dreyfuss Boston secured a nucleus of a first class team. Catcher Bowerman first baseman McGann shortstop Dahlen outfielder Browne and pitcher Ferguson join Boston while Tenney Bridwell and Needham depart in the biggest exchange among NL clubs in years.
The Boston club gains from a high profile exchange with New York as Dahlen and McGann seek a fresh start. Manager Joe Kelley stands firm, and after three meetings the deal closes at 8 PM with McGraw agreeing to discuss swap terms featuring a catcher, an outfielder, and an infielder.
In Camden New Jersey on December 13 the Chancery Court heard a divorce case where Exhibit BB showed Benjamin Heritage’s bald head. His wife alleged he struck her with a hair brush during an argument, and the defense then used his shiny bald head as evidence of his lack of use for a brush.
The Cunard liner Mauretania, due to sail for New York, struck a Mersey grounding near the landing stage but was floated with tug help and steam power early this morning. The incident was caused by drag on the ship's anchors as she swung with the tide.
The White House bulletin reports Mrs. Longworth had a very good day and is progressing rapidly with a condition entirely satisfactory. The update was issued tonight at 9:30 at the White House.
