Health Department Boston announces rumors of smallpox among city employees or stores are unfounded. No danger from infectious disease to visitors to Boston stores. Signed by C. I. Davis Jr Secretary, Dec 18 1901.
Rain in Boston and vicinity with continued high southeast winds then snow flurries and clearing colder weather. Winds shift to high northwest during the night. Sunday appears fair and much colder with brisk to high westerly winds.
The jury found Lola Ida Bonine not guilty in the murder of James Seymour Ayres Jr. at the Xenmere Hotel in Washington. After a four week trial and heavy local interest the court discharged the jurors and Bonine, with family, left via a back door.
Felix Agnus editor of the Baltimore American and Schley’s close ally writes from Baltimore on December 13 1901 that the court of inquiry verdicts are decisive though disappointing and predicts justice for Admiral Schley along the lines of Admiral Dewey’s today expressed view.
To the Editor of the Post Tsidor Rayner writes he will go to Washington at once to urge Admiral Schley to pursue the case to a finish by every appeal. The note is dated Baltimore December 13, 1901 and addresses seeking persistence in the legal fight.
Secretary Long released two reports on the Schley court of inquiry. The majority, signed by Dewey for form, condemns Schley on eleven points while Dewey’s separate report largely agrees on facts. The majority criticizes delayed actions, missed opportunities, and vacillation, urging swifter deployment to Cienfuegos and Santiago and stricter adherence to orders.
