Court Revokes Gloucester Mayor's Removal of License Commissioner
Salem December 13 Judge Edward P ierce of the Superior Court this afternoon filed a decree revoking the removal from office by Mayor George B Merchant of Gloucester of James R. Pringle license commissioner last summer. The court finds there was no evidence to warrant the removal on the charges preferred and orders Pringle recover his costs. The case, first of its kind, followed a sharp municipal campaign clash between Merchant, editor of the Cape in Breeze, and Pringle, editor of the Gloucester Daily News. Pringle’s friends contend Merchant’s defeat stemmed from criticisms of his administration. Pringle had been appointed May 24, 1898 and faced charges in June 1900 alleging inattention and direct connection with liquor business. A hearing occurred in Salem with Pringle represented by John J. Laherty and the mayor by A. P. White.

Christmas Bills Haunt Boston Poet in Back Bay Parlor
The poem laments Christmas bills that haunt a Boston narrator more than loans or taxes. He recalls familiar places like Marlboro Street and Somerville youth, noting shops, hotels closing early and the passing of Meyer's autos while fearing the endless Christmas bills for clothes and the tree. The speaker cherishes old streetcars and hills, yet laments the fate of never passing a Christmas bill.
