Captain Manuel Caton of the Adams fishing schooner Sea Fox recounts a gale off Georges Banks. Judge Awards Damages in Promised Marriage Case

In Superior Court judge and jury awarded Judith Cohen a 3 year old widow $350 for breach of promise against Philip Lakzinsky a 51 year old pedlar. Cohen alleged he sought a wife via Hebrew broker Wasserman and deceived guests at a planned March 3 wedding. Lakzinsky claimed he did not know Cohen had two children.

Assault to Kill in Dedham Trial Doors Open

In Dedham on Dec 9 in Superior Court Judge Lilley heard John Leonard of Hyde Park charged with assaulting John Haggerty and William Clark on Sept 30, 1895, with a hammer in a Readville area barn. Leonard claimed self defense after two intruders attacked him in his sleeping loft, testimony covered bloodied hammer, wounds, and Leonard’s prior conviction.

Chinese Christian Endeavor in Boston Formed

A Boston based Chinese Christian Endeavor society is formed linked to the Chinese mission at 114 Harrison Avenue led by Yong Kay. The group includes nineteen active members from Boston churches with two associates, and receives support from Clarendon Street Baptist, Berkeley Temple, Mt. Vernon, Warren Avenue, and Park Street churches. Officers include Yong Kay as president Yee Poy as vice president and Harriet Hunt as secretary, with an executive committee drawn from local churches. The society has received contributions from Francis E. Clark and Old South Church, and plans experimental meetings before full organization. Yong Kay, fluent in English and Chinese, heads meetings spoken entirely in Chinese to discuss topics in a Chinese style.
