James McHenry of London, a major investor in cross Atlantic railroads, sues Frank S Bond president of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad for libel. The suit follows Bond's remark disparaging Gowen's London speeches and calling Cave a fool and McHenry a vagabond.

A Wabash railroad freight train of thirty two cars, fourteen laden with livestock, fell eighty feet when a bridge span gave way at St Charles Missouri. The engineer is missing but the rest of the crew were saved with some injuries. Cause unknown.
Philadelphia December 8 report states Col Forney has Bright's disease of the kidneys and suffered a morning collapse. At his home it is said he endures a severe gout attack and heavy cold now described as critical. Late update says he is stoking rapidly and played through the night.
