Miss Jane Toppan of Lowell faces three indictments for murder in Barnstable, charged with administering morphine or atropine to Mrs. Mary D. Gibbs, A. P. Davis of Cataumet, and Mrs. Genevieve A. Gordon of Chicago. She pleaded not guilty, seeks state counsel, and awaits trial in spring 1902.

Miss Mary Alexander, a resident of 125 Leverett street, was attacked at 9 pm on Chambers street near Station 8. The assailant, a man known to her, followed her from church, struck her in the face, knocking her into the snow, then fled toward Cambridge street before being pursued. she was treated for a badly cut face and intends to press charges with Station 5 police.
Mayor elect Law announced that he would appoint Robert W. DeForest of New York as tenement house commissioner. DeForest had chaired the commission that drafted the law.
