Brisbane testifies on Times loan and Hearst ties

Washington December 5 Arthur Brisbane told a Senate committee brewers financed his purchase of the Washington Times with a $375000 loan and discussed relations with William Randolph Hearst. He said the loan came from brewer C J Feigenspan and that he did not know other brewers involved. He denied pro German editorials and stated his salary with Hearst was $2000 weekly. He also described offers to buy other papers and a Wisconsin consolidation, noting brewers were not involved in that deal. He described a Milwaukee loan to Victor Berger and recounted past contact with Lord Northcliffe when cables were cut. The witness claimed Hearst publishes as he pleases and that Hearst has no control over his political views. Death notices and a collision death followed in Canton and Somerville with funeral details to be announced.
