California Divided State Idea Sparks Capitol Attention
Washington dispatch reports Rep Wanderer of Los Angeles drew heavy press interest with General Vandever’s plan to split California into two states, creating a South California of southern counties. Democrats doubt passage, citing likely two Republican states. Delegates in Dakota push Sioux reservation division with open lands payment and a $200,000 surveying fund.

Chairman Mills to Rest Due to Health Strain
Chairman Mills of the ways and means committee will shortly leave Washington for rest in Virginia or North Carolina due to nervous prostration after a year of heavy work. He averaged eighteen hours daily during the tariff bill, and remains exhausted from relentless duties through the campaign. His physician orders absolute rest for recovery. The river and harbor bill is planned to be about 11 million dollars, with engineers estimating over 36 million, much unspent from the current year. A sub committee will draft the bill, with Cogswell and Catchings among others. Springfield Armory expenses for 1857–88 total about 562 thousand dollars across manufacture, arming, and ordnance stores.
