Chapters From Jane Austen Reviewed in Boston Classics

A critical piece argues that Oscar Fay Adams selection from Jane Austen's Emma fails to convey the novel's full character and scope. The review contends that fragmenting Austen's writing robs readers of the miniature yet powerful artistry Miss Austen designed. It contrasts with Rider Haggard style adaptations and notes the volume offers only a taste of Austen's wit and style, not her complete character portrayal.

Some essays, like Tourgée’s survey and Browne’s To Marry or Not to Marry, are less illuminating, but several stand out for the thoughtful reader. Tolstoi’s teaching is summarized as simple yet profound, with comments forbidding further glosses and stressing accessibility to the masses.
