Boston Harbor appropriation fight looms in Congress

WASHINGTON PORT December reports indicate Boston will push for a record federal grant to improve Boston Harbor. A river and harbor committee session and negotiations with Congressman Lawrence center on a possible 6 to 11 million dollar appropriation, amid War Department cost projections suggesting needed funds could reach about 10 to 11 million. The stake is a large channel upgrade with 2000 to 1600 feet width and 95 feet depth at high water, contested by Boston and national ship interests.

Fire gutts Heywood Bros building in Boston blaze

A five story block at Portland and Causeway streets in Boston burned after 6 am. The Wakefield Company furniture stock and Cobb Bates Yerxa store were ruined. Fire spread quickly with high winds and heavy smoke. no injuries reported and people evacuated safely. Estimated losses reached up to 250000 dollars.

WRECKS ALONG COAST REPORTED AT MULTIPLE PORTS

Venal vessels ashore or sunk are reported from various points along the coast. Four schooners were driven ashore at Beverly. One tug and five barges were sunk at Newburyport. Another tug was injured in collision. Three schooners were driven ashore at Salem.

Four schooners were driven ashore in a 60 knot gale off Beverly. The Hines of Calais with a full cargo from Bangor to Boston is badly damaged and taking water. The Victory of Bangor drifted to the beach after failed anchors. The Sears of Lubec was landed safely. Crew members including Captain Edward Chadwick were rescued amid the storm as locals and police aided efforts.
