A early morning fire at the Arcadia Hotel trapped about thirty guests in a lodging house. Two persons died and others were missing as firefighters battled the blaze amid rising smoke and flames.
The funeral for William C. Russell, a Melrose recluse, is to be held in Wyoming Cemetery this afternoon. His heir Dakota Dan, who claims the estate, asks police protection and says he will attend to view the body, hoping for a square deal after months of hardship.
The New Haven railroad plans to relinquish control of steamship and trolley lines and cut its connections with the Boston & Maine and the Boston & Albany railroads. Negotiations with Attorney General McReynolds produced an unofficial statement of the plan, with an agreed decree to be sought in district court unless issues arise.
The accord calls for separating the New Haven from the Boston and Maine railroad and its Massachusetts trolley operations. It also relinquishes New Haven control of steamship lines used to compete for New Haven traffic and nullifies the New Haven and Boston and Albany agreement, avoiding court litigation with the Department of Justice.
Mayor Charles S. Ashley won a 17th term in New Bedford by about 1300 votes over Fusion candidate Edward R. Hathaway. The Citizens party also held five of six alderman seats while Fusion captured seven council seats. license votes were Yes 6935 and No 4438, down from last year's Yes 8558 No 5649.
President A G Daniells of the Atlantic Union Conference told the biennial Seventh-day Adventists gathering at South Lancaster that the generation beginning in 1844 will see Christ’s second coming. He asserted a time limit on God’s workers and said the last generation will not pass before Jesus returns, whether starting in 1833 or 1844.
The body of 38 year old Albert W. Stewart of Medford was found beside the Boston and Maine station tracks overnight. Authorities believe he was killed by falling or jumping from a late train, the incident occurring near the station.
Over 500 residents and members of the Neighborhood Club gathered in All Saints Church vestry to hear a debate on woman suffrage. Rev Dr Samuel McCoomb of Emmanuel Church spoke for suffrage while Professor Ernest Bernbaum of Harvard argued against it.
Miss Dorothea Finlay 23, daughter of Albert W and Dora Finlay, testified as the principal witness yesterday in the Dedham Divorce Court case on cross libels for divorce. The hearing recounted how a woman with five children became stage struck and favored her daughter's drama teacher over her husband. Actor and dramatic instructor Arthur W Bradman is named as co respondent.
Miss Finlay began Bradman lessons in January 1912 with her mother beside her. Weeks later the mother planned to take lessons, prompting her husband to demand she abandon stage ambitions or leave home. She chose to depart. In June Bradman’s stock company then included Mrs and Miss Finlay.
Three $1000 gold notes were found in a hotel safety deposit box and attached by the sheriff. The notes were linked to James E. Foye the clerk who forged $250000 in General Electric stock and borrowed against it. Recovery reduces banking losses connected to Foye’s scheme to under $40,000.
Mrs William K Vanderbilt Jr will have a German shepherd trained as her personal bodyguard. Trainer Henry I Baer has received a commission to train the dog at Gedney Farm kennels near White Plains. Baer also trains German dogs for Lawrence Waterbury and Harry Payne Whitney.
John Morey a 40 year old farm hand in Charlton ended his life by a single 82 calibre pistol shot to the head fired at close range into a mirror this afternoon. He died about forty five minutes later.
An automobile owned by Mrs Henrietta Jenks of 175 Naples Road Brookline was stolen from in front of her door shortly before 7 o clock last night. The machine bears number 10450 and is a dark blue touring car.

The blaze broke out shortly after 2 o clock in a wooden lodging house on West Dedham street. Rescue attempts failed as firefighters battled the flames with ladders and eight people were injured by 2 30 city hospital reports. The building housed about 100 to 150 lodgers on busy weekends and burned rapidly through the interior.
Edward Holcott was killed in a razor duel near a lodging house at 124 Camden Street in the South End. Wheeler Mills, last seen with Holcott, fled the scene and remains at large as police hunt for him after the basement argument and fatal wound.
In Juarez a peace commission led by Odilon Hernandez announced terms of surrender from seven Mexican regular army generals, signaling the collapse of Huerta’s northern command. The proclamation declares the Huerta government bankrupt and unable to pay troops.
