Receiver George H. Earle Jr. took charge today after the Real Estate Trust Company failed the prior day due to heavy loans by former president Frank K. Hipple to promoter Adolf Segal. Earle expects to complete an investigation and believes trust funds remain intact.
John H Converse, a director, reported confidence that Presbyterian church board securities are safe as the Fidelity Trust Company was chosen to replace Hipple as treasurer of the Presbyterian Hospital. About 1.5 million in securities and 150000 cash, including 10000 from the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, were discussed amid rumors of a 4.7 million guarantee plan to reopen the bank. Cottage City reports the death of Professor William Buck Dwight of Vassar College after a fall into the water from a pier near his summer residence. The physician cites apoplexy likely from overexertion as the cause.
Professor Dwight, one of the oldest and least known summer colony members, was born in Constantinople, Turkey on May 22, 1888. He was the son of Harrison Gray Otis Dwight, an American missionary, moved to the United States permanently in 1849, and graduated from Yale in 1854. He founded the Englewood Institute in 1859, taught at West Point, spent 27 years with Vassar College, and since 1834 served as the New York State geology examiner.
