Collector Saltonstall investigated five girl immigrants held on the Cunard Catalonia amid claims they came from Belfast through an agreement with Ross Turner’s Jamaica Plain twine mill. The plan allegedly charged their travel costs by deducting three shillings from salaries until repaid. Dickinson argued they were not hired locally and the work was new to the country, needing skilled labor. The collector offered release if the facts could be proved. Safety Elevator Air Cushion Trial At A Shuman & Co
A new safety air cushion installed in the passenger elevator at A Shuman & Co clothing store was tested successfully. The car fell from eighty five feet before the bottom, the air in the shaft compressed to cushion and stop the descent, leaving the occupant unharmed. The system uses a brick wall around the shaft bottom and a timber shaft above to trap air. A potential flaw is an open brick wall door that could ruin the airtight shaft and cause a wreck.
