A string of destructive storms swept through South Dakota Illinois Indiana and Kentucky on August 29. A tornado east of Huron South Dakota leveled homes near Bloodgood Cook and Cook while injuries and fatalities were reported as a farmer’s loss of his house livestock and mules was noted. In Evansville Indiana a storm caused at least 250000 in damages with wrecked foundry steamers and damaged churches. Kentucky's Nelson County saw crops and buildings damaged including Bloomfield and Broadbent’s factory.
The North Atlantic Squadron sailed from Newport today as Secretary Chandler and numerous dignitaries joined the Albatross for the sea maneuvers. Attending were Senators Hawley Aldrich and Butler, Postmaster General Gresham, Mayor Franklin, and many others. The fleet proceeded southeast from Point Judith. the Despatch with President Arthur and officials followed, then returned to Naragansett Pier while the Albatross and squadron anchored at Newport by 4:30 PM.
Divers Dun can Phillips and Nickerson of lighter Oak inspected the wreck of the Tallapoosa near Vineyard Haven with Capt. L. F. Baker and Capt. Moses B. Tower directing. The Nina under Lieut. Com. Hitchcock also assisted. They found an 18 foot hull breach, deck cut seven and a half feet, and a 18 to 20 foot depth to sand. Upper works and hatchways are ruined and saloon entrances blocked by debris. No bodies or cargo recovered.

Augusta Maine August 29 The cemetery superintendent says about 1000 visitors have examined the damaged tablet marking the grave of Blaine's infant son Stanwood. The small tablet shows the year birth altered by chiseling off the last digit. The tampering was nearly complete and easily overlooked by a passerby unaware of the facts.
A stranger, unidentified and believed to be a sailor, was found unconscious in the street and brought to New York Hospital where he died in the last stage of yellow fever. An autopsy was performed and the body buried. no identifying items were found on the victim.
Indianapolis Aug 29 The 15 day period for the defense in the Blaine libel suit against the Sentinel expired today and Shoemaker’s attorneys filed an appearance to avoid default. The defense will gain its own time unless plaintiffs’ counsel obtain a rule for an immediate answer. In such cases a further ten days is customary.
New York reporting James McFaull and William H. Hadler, youths living uptown, climbed the Second Avenue Elevated pillars and played on the track as a special train sped by. McFaull was killed instantly while Hadler was hurled to the sidewalk and died soon after from injuries.
New York Aug 29 authorities now believe forged paper circulated by Joseph W Pease the Beaver Street fruit importer under arrest will exceed $100,000 Several tanks have been victimized and the case widens with ongoing investigations and arrests expected.

In Petol he was greeted by multiple steamers with salutes, then lunch at Camp Dashaway followed by Vermont Democrats at Mognan. He returned to Plattsburgh and left for Albany amid a large, enthusiastic crowd at the depot.

In O Fallon region Mrs Crowthers killed Mrs Cornack with a kitchen knife after a dispute over wages for a child’s chores. Crowthers then wounded herself and died later. Authorities note the killings stemmed from a quarrel over the child’s pay, shocking the town.
