Fact River August 28 notice to Spinners Association members calls a special general meeting for September 2 at Spinners Hall. The aim is a large Labor Day procession of about 800 members, boosting union pride and showing strength. A $10 prize will go to the mill with the highest parade participation.
Tenants in East One Hundred and Sixth Street apartment heard pistol shots and found painter John Baxter, his wife Mary, and two children dead from close range. A four-shot sequence suggests immediate deaths. A note to his mother claimed intent to kill them and himself. authorities deem Baxter insane.
A train on the electric railroad between Thirty-ninth Street Brooklyn and Bath Beach collided with a brewery wagon at Forty-second Street. Gavin Roe a guest at Bolingbrook House Bath Beach was fatally injured. William Baines the motorman and Fred Benner Camp the wagon driver were seriously hurt along with one Meyer.

A Melbourne despatch reports the Gambier and Easby collided inside Port Phillip Heads at one o'clock. The Gambier sank stern first after eight minutes, taking five saloon passengers, fifteen steerage passengers, and six crew. The Easby rescued many before her bow was damaged and she searched for survivors.
Damaged and her head gear was carried away. No explanation is given for the collision. The sea was calm and the night was clear, and it is claimed by many persons that proper lookouts were not kept on either of the steamers.

A powerful afternoon hurricane struck Mt Washington Massachusetts near South Egremont yesterday. The storm carved a 160 foot wide path through woods and fields near O C Whitlock’s property, scattering logs and debris while Sky Farm Cottage escaped major damage. No buildings were in the direct track, easing potential harm to summer boarders housed there.
New York Republicans report Western New York delegates from Erie Orleans Wyoming Niagara and likely Monroe will nominate ex mayor Phillip Becker of Buffalo for governor at the September 9 state convention in Rochester. Aug 28 Rutland Vermont General William Wells of Burlington will be the successor to Redfield Proctor as Secretary of War. Wells formerly served as collector of the port of Burlington and heads Wells and Richardson, a large wholesale drug concern. He served in the Union Army and was brevetted brigadier general. Sheridan praised him as one of the best cavalry officers.
Three Boston women Mrs Bates Mrs Newman and Mrs Wilkins were bathing in the upper bay near the channel when swept beyond their depth by a swift current. Mrs Bates drowned while the others were rescued and, after medical aid from Drs Hodgson and Galligan, were expected to recover. Cries drew spectators to the shore.
Major J B Campbell of the Second Artillery US Army died suddenly at the Windsor Hotel Montreal age about 45. He had just been promoted and was to join his command at Fort Thurnbull Connecticut after a two month leave for health. Death caused by rupture of a brain blood vessel. He was a West Point graduate who served in the Civil War and was held in high regard by U S war authorities.

Nasuva N H Aug 29 Royal D Barnes a renowned criminal lawyer shot himself at midnight saying temporary insanity caused the act. A prominent Hillsboro county bar member he leaves a wife and three children.
An unknown man was struck by the 10 40 train to Boston at Malden while walking on the track. He sustained severe head and body injuries and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where doctors fear fatal wounds.
Burrano Vermont August 28 Rain delayed Vermont demonstrations for the President then cleared. He viewed marble quarrying and mills at Proctor before a two mile carriage circuit to Memorial Hall in Rutland. Colonel Baker introduced him and he thanked Rutland’s citizens for their respect while urging national unity and emancipation remembered from the Civil War. Continued on second page.

Lice reduce Washington, prices buoyed by German and English crops, while cranberries and potatoes face shifts.
Newport R I Aug 28 Special to the Post Mrs Ogden Mills hosted a pretty cotillon in her white and gold ballroom with 120 guests including Elisha Dyer Jr. The farewell season supper was served at 1 am. Notable names from Boston and Newport attended and registered at the Casino and Ocean House for the weekend.
The steel cruiser Concord arrived to aid the White Squadron but needed repairs at Brooklyn Navy Yard after an accident. The three masted schooner Robbins, off Mount Desert, capsized in fog near Duck Island, caused by mistaking a whistle. Robbins valued at $20,000. Eastern Maine Railway Company held its adjourned annual meeting at Grand Central Hotel with directors elected. About 100 guests attended a Canoe Club reception. White Squadron officers attended.
A masked burglar entered the Humphrey residence at Butler and Orcharda streets in Providence. He climbed a ladder to the second story, threatened Mrs. Daniels, and looted two watches two diamond rings and other jewelry valued at 500 dollars before escaping. Police had no clue.
Treasury reports New York banks buy 4. per cent bonds and sell 4.50 per cent bonds to sustain circulation at 2 per cent. Since July 1, national bank note issuance rose by over 5 million dollars. Evidence points to continued efforts by banks in New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia to expand the 2 per cent basis. As of today the 4% bonds kept at 2% total 22,463,900 dollars with 454,000 dollars held at the 2% rate.
John Kelly 12, son of Mrs Ellen Kelly of Crescent street Newton, was seriously hurt at noon when a dynamite cartridge he was pounding exploded. Shell fragments lacerated his chest and he may lose sight in one eye. Police suspect he obtained the cartridge from a water hoy on Park street sewer.
