Carpenter fled town within a week after admitting misappropriation on his signature. he held a trial justice appointment from 1880 to 1891.
Senator Chandler publishes a letter to Secretary Moseley of the Interstate Commerce Commission alleging Boston and Maine officials violated multiple interstate commerce sections by issuing free passes. He calls for a full investigation by the ICC and for the disclosed facts to be sent to U.S. District Attorneys for Maine New Hampshire and Massachusetts to act on.
A West North Carolina road mail train derailed after rails spread near a stone bridge over Third Creek two miles west of Statesville. Twenty passengers were killed, nine seriously hurt, about twenty injured. water levels hindered rescues. Names of the dead include engineer William M Wrst of Salisbury and fireman Warren Fry of Hickory with several others from Asheville and nearby towns. The bridge was undamaged and service resumed.
Hartford Aug 27 Charter Oak Park drew about 7000 spectators despite threatening weather. Rain halted racing from 1 to 3 pm, then competition resumed. Nightingale driven by Geers won the $10,000 2:20 trot stake ahead of rivals. Lucid others, including Frank Dortch in the 2:21 pacers, also noted with six heats needed for the 2:17 class.
The Eastern fleet failed to reach Campus Maine as expected after a tug separated them for Rockland. They anchored at Owl's Head Bay in bad weather, then proceeded to Portland and Bass Harbor before heading toward Boston. Thelma did not join the fleet due to miscommunication and will likely miss Marblehead regatta.

The sixth annual field meeting of the New Hampshire State Board of Agriculture was held at the Boar's Head Hampton with nine of twelve board members present and farmers from across the state.
