Allison for Free Sugar Reciprocity Threatens New England Shoe Industry

Washington Aug 28 Special Senator Allison prepares for a bold break with Republican allies over free sugar policy arguing the finance committee overreached in bond support for Pennsylvania and Ohio manufacturers. He will press for free sugar to No 16 Dutch standard and may attack the sugar trust while noting possible wool and woollen duty changes. The reciprocity amendment lets the President suspend duties if foreign nations unfairly tax US products, a move viewed as dangerous to New England shoe firms and a tool for broader tariff leverage. The proposed section grants detailed duty schedules on sugars molasses coffee tea hides and other items and outlines presidential suspension powers with later duties levied upon designations. The President plans a trip to Cres on and the Chicago cruiser is ordered to Boston for two months of repairs.
