Colonel Valle of the rural guards telegraphed the government announcing the defeat of an insurgent force led by General Guzman near Cienfuegos. He reported 17 rebels killed and several wounded while rural guards suffered one man and four horses lost.
Rural guards arrested several prominent Liberals including two editors of Manscanillo in Santiago Province on charges of conspiracy. They allegedly planned to form an insurgent band in Santiago. Bartolome Masso, a Cuban war figure, spoke to veterans in Manseaville about sending a committee to a forthcoming Havana veterans meeting.
General Montalvo acting secretary of the interior issues an order under President Palma to allow insurgents in Pinar del Rio Havana Matanzas and Santa Clara to return home if they repent surrender or are captured chiefs who surrender with followers arms will be returned to their families. Government guarantees non disturbance and freedom to pursue normal lives for all who surrender.

Chicopee authorities think city clerk and treasurer John D. White is in Boston. An all day citizen search led by Mayor A. E. Taylor checked Chicopee roads and woods. Police have reports of sightings and Boston police were asked to search. White is believed to have a nervous breakdown.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for clearing Tuesday morning then fair and cooler with light west winds. Tuesday showers in the eastern portion of New England, cooler Wednesday with fair conditions. Steamers to European ports face a fresh northwest wind and showers toward the Grand Banks.
The State Board of Health concluded an inquiry into Newburyport ice cream production and sales amid illness reports. It found eight facilities were filthy and many workers lax about cleanliness, while local officials allegedly issued cleanliness certificates to some. The probe details poor can cleaning, dirty water for scoops, and dim lighting in several kitchens.
John B. Moran's managers express confidence that Josiah Quincy will quit the State committee and cede control. A Moran lieutenant cited Quincy's letter offering resignation if Moran receives the nomination. The district attorney has not yet commented though his Massachusetts citizens pledge remains noted. Quincy denies giving up, and his supporters anticipate a post NY Bryan reception surprise.

Seven East Boston girls on a pleasure trip near Governor's Island were saved when a power yacht responding to their distress tow line capsized their boat. The girls, aided by three yachtsmen, were pulled aboard and only one suffered lingering effects, which will recover.
A crew of six girls ages 7 to 17 from Maverick street East Boston sailed a rowboat on Boston Harbor. When a loose oar lock caused the craft to drift across a yacht tender, the boat capsized. Three men dove in to help and five swimmers were rescued. two girls unable to swim were saved with assistance. One girl, Tay O Malley, remained under medical care with shock but is reportedly resting comfortably.
Miss Amelia H. Cook daughter of Major W. W. Cook of Plymouth married Charles B. Swain in Malden at Faulkner Methodist Church parsonage. The couple, witnessed by Swain family, stayed for a wedding supper at the groom’s parents home. The bride, educated in music and drama, and Swain a Boston lumber dealer and Harvard tackle brother, will begin housekeeping soon.
Captain James M. Littleton of the Boston Fire Department petitions for a veteran's certificate after 35 years service. He joined Hose 7 as a call man in 1871 at age 20 and served at the great Boston fire of 1872. He became captain Jan 7, 1887 and has led Engine 20 since Oct 16, 1896.
Yale varsity crew confirmed invited to row in England this summer. If Yale had won at New London in June the invitation would have been accepted. After defeat, correspondence went to Harvard, with Yale expected to row promptly if accepted.
