Market Opening Boom Fades in Harsh Close on Averages
The New York stock market opened with a boom in August 26 trading, led by New York Central and C. C. & St. Louis with gains near 17 percent. The surge faltered, guiding a steady firm tone into the late session as money rates stayed low and buying resumed, pushing most shares higher. Sugar Refineries rose on rumors of $10 million in stock deposits, with other leaders like Big Four, Lackawanna, Denver & Rio Grande, and Lake Shore posting varied gains. Bond activity was modest and declines outpaced advances in the close, with total turnover around $593,000.
