The stoppage affects 150 workers as Berkshire woollen mill failures persist. The cause cited is a dull market and slim margins. the firm has staunch Republican ties and strong tariff support for imported raw wool.
The Rumford Falls and Buckfield railroad has been sold to Brown and Chisholm of Portland and partners who own Rumford Falls water power. Agent Walter Pettingill says 75 to 100 workers will start at Rumford Falls building dams canals and cutting lumber. Hayer's mill at Canton will relocate to Rumford to saw lumber. The line will extend from Canton to Rumford Falls a fifteen mile project.
