Faneuil Hall hosted a mass meeting of striking telegraphers with speakers from various trade unions pledging financial and moral support. The crowd cheered proposals for national government takeover of telegraph lines, predicting a victory for the strikers.
Over 500 telegraphers gather with James Shannon presiding as J F Body of the Boston & Maine branch pledges support. Women employees cheer as the union signals solidarity despite a company schedule, raising strong enthusiasm at the hall. Peter W. Collins of Springfield, Illinois is named in the readable fragments.
In Brattleboro Vermont 13 year old George Wetherbee son of Charles Wetherbee was electrocuted when he touched a live feed wire from the Twin State Gas and Electric power station. The shock estimated at 10 000 to 11 000 volts hurled him into the West River four feet below where his body was recovered. Another boy nearby was severely shocked.
In Lynn on August 25 E Chester Doyle aged 16 a messenger at Central National Bank drowned when a canoe capsized on Sluice Pond. He and his brother James were swimming so both were strong swimmers but Chester reportedly struck his head and was knocked unconscious. James reached shore and Chester’s body was recovered soon after.
In Bar Harbor Maine a carriage returning from a Northeast Harbor dance was spooked by lightning. A horse threw four occupants, and Miss Emilie Carbonario, a domestic in Seal Harbor, died.
Richard Conley age 19 of Boston was killed by a passenger train on New York Central tracks one mile east of Walworth station while traveling with Albert Roderick and Frank O'Neil both of Boston en route to Niagara Falls. Conley’s father and stepmother live in Boston. Frank G. Arnold who cared for him is a market proprietor.
Frank Arnold of Madison Street Roxbury says Richard Conley had not lived at his home and has been in his employ on and off for two years. Arnold will attempt to locate Conley’s parents at once.
Massachusetts Swedish American legislator Edward J. Sandberg greets Prince Wilhelm of Sweden in Boston. The message emphasizes warm welcome from Swedish American citizens and deep respect for the Swedish royal house and nation.
After a gay Newport week Prince Wilhelm of Sweden travels to Massachusetts. Worcester and Boston prepare for his arrival with Swedish colors in streets and crowds of Swedish parentage children and young ladies ready to greet him with songs of the fatherland.
The Nahant Club hosts a reception Tuesday afternoon for the prince in Nahant with Mrs. Curtis Guild as hostess. Governors’s wife presence and naval officers heighten the event as a premier social function of the week in Nahant and nearby Worcester and Boston.
Washington reports the Japanese have placed a 1 000 torpedo order with Whitehead of England costing five million dollars. The move blocks U S access to newer torpedoes for a decade and signals Tokyo’s set strategy amid Allied diplomacy. The price is five thousand dollars per torpedo with no bulk discount.
Report from Rio dated August 26 says Japanese fishermen offered no resistance in the Pribyloff incident of June 19 and that American guards fired unprovoked. Washington has been notified and Tokyo awaits a reply as public interest grows.
A lion attacked Captain F. Briggs, a tamer, at a Cleveland area pleasure resort, injuring several women and children as panic spread. The beast struck the trainer with a paw blow and gnawed his thigh before attendants subdued it, with no serious injuries besides Briggs.
Representatives of Klaw and Erlanger along with the Shuberts seized the Lyric Theatre in Buffalo after a confrontation in which revolvers were reportedly shown. John Laughlin, a ten year fighter of the Theatrical Trust, was forcibly removed. Doors were barricaded, locks changed, and guards posted at all entrances.
A local revolution erupted in San Luis the capital of the province 140 miles southeast of Buenos Aires. The police chief led the uprising, imprisoning the Governor and provincial authorities. A new Governor, Adaro, was installed immediately.
Fair skies for Boston and vicinity with light westerly winds on Monday and Tuesday. Washington forecast notes New England fair with light to moderate west winds and increasing cloudiness in Eastern New York on Monday and Tuesday.

A large incendiary fire at the D Este excelsior warehouse corner Cambridge and Spice streets Charlestown injured one fireman and saved five horses. Firefighters faced access challenges as 20 000 bales of excelsior fed the flames. Initial damage estimated at about 20 000 dollars with 15 000 to stock and 5 000 to building.
Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor arrives in Boston to prepare for his address before the special recess committee appointed by the last Legislature to review the anti injunc tion bill and related labor measures. He will urge laws to define and restrain court powers in injunction cases especially in industrial disputes. Arthur M. Huddell and Philip H. Sweet of the Boston Central Labor Union will meet him during his stay.
W. Waldo Merrill of the Boston firm W. Waldo Merrill & Co. stock brokers, 53 State street, died from a broken neck. Eric Landstrom, chauffeur, of Milton, was pinned under a car in the same incident.
Frederic L. Milliken of Corey Milliken and Co Boston reports injuries not serious to himself and wife Mrs Frederic L Milliken. Miss Rita Milliken has a wrist fracture. Mrs W Waldo Merrill also slightly injured after a fall.
W Waldo Merrill a Boston stock broker and Eric Landstrom of Milton a chauffeur for Frederic L Milliken of Corey Milliken Co Boston were instantly killed in an automobile crash at Saunderstown this afternoon in Narragansett Pier.
A six person party in a Milliken touring car from Newport swerved, overturned, and crashed into a stone wall after leaving Newport about 1 30 p m. Chauffeur Landstrom and Mr Merrill died under the wreck while Miss Rita Milliken fractured her wrist. The others escaped with minor injuries as the car crossed the island and moved toward Saunderstown.
