Robert J. Evans of Brookline police, trapped with his 4 year old son Robert in a burning stable, tossed the boy to a waiting mother 25 feet below and then leaped from the window, narrowly escaping death when escape via the stairway was cut off.
Evans, longtime coachman and now patrolman, slept as a fire in the Kent square stable started on the ground floor. He woke his wife, found his boy after a perilous search, and leaped from a window with the child. He escaped with minor injuries while the upper floor burned. loss included carriages and harnesses.
A backfire set by a deputy fire ward, unknown to the chief, escaped and joined the main blaze, forcing 300 men to seek shelter. The week’s great fire, believed contained, surged anew toward Pocasset woods and Bournedale, threatening 15 of 20 houses on the main road plus the Keith works and 500 Keith plant workers were summoned to aid.
