Fire at old glass works in South Boston destroys landmark

A four story brick building at the old Bay State Glass Company site on Mercer street in South Boston was total loss from a suspected incendiary fire last night. A yacht club house also burned as nearby tenements faced the blaze. Firemen prevented spread to adjacent homes as alarms drew crowds and officials noted the long history of still alarms at the site.

East Boston Fire Driver Injured In Street Accident

William F. Johnston driver of Engine 5 was thrown from his seat when the forward axle broke on the engine near Porter and Paris streets. He sustained a broken left leg and possible spinal injury and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the department in 1896 and is married with many friends on Noddle Island.

Man with Broken Neck Found After Two Hours in Cellar

John McElaney lay for over two hours in a cellar at 74 North Margin street after being thought intoxicated. He fell down stairs, was found unresponsive, and taken to City Hospital where doctors diagnosed a broken cervical vertebra. He lives at 28 1/2 Commercial Street and remained on the dangerous list.

Man Found After Ten Hours In Fridge Injury at Central Wharf

Patrick E. Larkin 47 of 40 Adams Street Charlestown fell at 20 Central Wharf and landed in a large refrigerator. He suffered fourteen cuts on head and face and lay in the cold ten hours before being found and rushed to the Emergency hospital for forty two stitches and possible eye and ear injuries. He is expected to recover.
