The secretary of the treasury invites each state to send two delegates to Mexico City on October 1 to discuss abolishing internal revenue custom houses and to propose a new tax to offset state losses. A fire at 3:30 P M on Front street Salem damaged a planing mill owned by M J Goldthwaite of Marblehead and occupied by W J Stickney and A J Faxon. The building was gutted with losses totaling 11 000, insured portions listed for building stock machinery and contents. Fire started in shavings in the cellar cause unknown and repairs will begin soon.
Rutland Vermont August 22 ex treasurer J M Haven of the Rutland railroad was arrested charged with over issuing 4717 shares of preferred stock in the Rutland railroad and placed under five thousand ninety dollar bond for appearance before the county grand jury in October term.
In the Delaware River off Philadelphia on Aug 22 the Gloucester Ferry Dauntless struck the Emma Kline. Six aboard the yacht escaped but one man named Young drowned. The Emma Kline owned by Joseph and George Kline was valued at 3000 dollars and sank within three minutes in the main channel.
Eastern rail freight officials met yesterday to divert business toward weaker roads to even up centage gains. The move drew active opposition from Grand Trunk and failed to satisfy shippers. The issue was referred to the general manager for decision.

Division 3 A O H Boston Highlands held at Massapoag grove Sharon Heights awarding rifle and running prizes and a tug of war victory for Stoney Brook and Muddy River workers with a $100 prize.
E W Bullinger of New York offers 500 dollars for information leading to the whereabouts of the sloop Mystery or its crew before Sept. 1. Bodies found near West Falmouth are believed to be from the Mystery, including one Sargent. A separate 100 dollar reward is offered for the Hawkins body. searches continue from Nantucket to Port Jefferson as crews seek the ill fated vessel's remains.

Daniel Kimball, 28, was intoxicated when he climbed the crosstrees of the schooner Georgia at Caswell's wharf in Charlestown and leapt 70 feet into the water. He struck feet first, breaking his right arm and suffering other injuries, and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Kirkland Fitch the $80,000 defaulter from Warren Ohio surrendered to police in Boston and is now taken back to Warren in custody. A Dorchester woman died after being thrown from a carriage on Madison Street. A thief snatched Mrs Wilkins’s satchel at the Hotel Botolph steps. James Ames, 7, is missing from 11 Foster Street. A Fitchburg railroad worker was injured in Somerville. Two boys injured in an elevator incident on North Street. James O Neil injured after a fall from a wagon in South Boston. Sheehan and Stone arrested for jewelry store larceny. Dent arrested on a warrant for larceny of a sword. The sword was stolen June 15.

Roland Reed is welcomed at the Park and The Gavy'nor plays tonight at the Museum with Mr Wilson as the deaf boat builder. The Howard offers a high quality variety program while Fostelle stays at Oakland for a week. Olivette at the Park Garden also receives favorable notes.
The second annual excursion of the Suburban Press association occurs Saturday September 1. The route travels north over the Lowell Concord Boston Concord Montreal White Mountain and Passumpsic railroads to Newport Vermont where headquarters are at the Memphremagog house for Sunday and Monday. Excursions to nearby resorts will follow before the group returns to Boston on Tuesday.

James E Ross age 31 of 85 Fifth Street East Cambridge and James Crisp 25 set out about 9 P M in a coal laden boat from Ward's Island to Long Island. The boat sank. Crisp is believed drowned. Ross was rescued by James Sullivan and Lorenzo Hicks of the yacht Clara and admitted to City hospital.
Bontondare Carmino, injured on the New York and New England railroad August 6, died Tuesday at City hospital. He said he was pushed off the train by a brakeman before his death, while the train hands deny the claim and a full investigation is ordered.
Lieut. F. E. Sawyer and Passed Assistant Surgeon H. P. Harvey U S N have taken leave. About 30 caulkers from the Shenandoah construction department were discharged on Wednesday.
