Montreal August 20 The amalgamation of Canadian telegraph firms with Western Union guarantees of eight and six percent was completed in New York. An agreement transfers all interests to the Northwest Company, now headed from Toronto.

Comet U Visible to Naked Eye in Cincinnati Night Sky

In Cincinnati on August 21 at 9 pm comet U appears naked eye in Ursa Major about 12 degrees below the bowl of the Dieper. It is the brighter member of a faint pair of stars, with the tail visible through opera glass.

Eliza Hancox Chief Engineer Found Dead at Foster's Wharf

Almeron Smith 35, chief engineer of the steamer Eliza Hancox, was found dead in the wheel house at Foster's wharf around 9:30 on Sunday morning after inspecting a paddle wheel. He lived in Catskill, N Y and the body was given to Undertaker Tinkham. Police report also note two other deaths from accidents and a series of minor incidents including an attempted suicide by razor, a self inflicted gunshot wound, and an officer being assaulted during a cigars theft arrest, with several suspects taken into custody.

Maine Fish Commissioners Restock Rivers with Salmon and Shad

The fish commissioners restocked Maine waters placing 150000 young sea salmon in the Kennebec and Presumpscot and 800000 in the Penobscot, with 50000 land-locked salmon in each river. They added 1000000 shad to the Kennebec at Waterville and 1000000 to the Penobscot, plus 2000000 whitefish to Rangeley lakes. Last winter the legislature appropriated 5000 for propagation, and restocking of smaller ponds with black bass is planned.

Skiff of Monkton narrowly escaped death due to a pharmacist error at a Pittsburgh apothecary mixing a poison solution. the patient had previously taken the same prescription and sought an exam before use.

Aug 21 reports from Santa Fe describe Lieut Taylor routing a Navajo camp in the San Marteo mountains and twenty horses seized. Troops under Gen. Hatch are stretched thin as citizens urge militia, with three volunteer companies en route to Albuquerque. Six fights yield thirty deaths and twenty troop losses.
