Wakefield buzzes as Chief Harvey S. Brockbank fails to return from vacation and rumors spread that he will resign. Local authorities have not announced his status, fueling speculation about the police force’s leadership.
At Thursday night council meeting Town Counsel Maynard S Clemons handed an unsigned notice to the Selectmen stating the chief had resigned. Clemons refused to discuss the matter or explain why Chief Brockbank engaged counsel.
Mrs. Brockbank reports her husband Chief Brockbank, a sergeant in Company A and drillmaster of the high school cadets, failed to return home. Neighbors and militia members indicate he did not attend camp or maneuvers all week. He left Aug 1 for a rest and may be elsewhere, with no word since.
Holmes Lyons, caretaker for George C. Lee Jr. of Lee Higginson & Co. Boston, suffered severe burns in a gasoline explosion at the Lee estate in Westwood. The blast destroyed a large water tower and endangered the mansion.
Lyons was in the basement of the water tower when an explosion tore through a gasoline engine. Burning clothing sent him rushing out as neighbors beat out the flames. The blaze shot high, ignited gallons of gasoline, and toppled the tower. firefighters redirected to spare a nearby house and saved it.
Francis Meade, 15, of Leicester, built a large winged contraption without propulsion and jumped from a barn loft about 20 feet high. His failed flight left him with a broken right ankle and no buoyancy to lift him into the air. He lives with his uncle Jonathan A. Eddy on North road.

Marblehead Aug 20 The Eastern Y C trial races to pick two more sender boats join Ellen for the German American races and the Taft cup set to begin next week. The selections are the Joyette and Wolf. Joyette owned by Commodore W H Childs Bensonhurst Y C New York designed by Charles D Mower sailed by W W Swan. Wolf owned and sailed by Caleb Loring Eastern Y C designed by W Starling Burgess.
The Wolf was chosen as the selection after a three hour committee discussion, a surprising outcome noted by the Crooner and others involved in the decision.
Miss Virginia Paul and W. Brook Lessig drowned in the surf at Wildwood Crest Lake while attempting to save each other. Paul, 21, was a Philadelphia social leader and stepdaughter of Clarence Jeffries, a Pennsylvania railroad official, residing in Swarthmore. They were guests at Merton Z. Paul’s cottage.
Two expert swimmers entered a point below the regular bathing grounds and were swept out by a dangerous current. Miss Paul tried to aid Lessig but both disappeared before lifeboat crews could reach them. their bodies were not recovered.
Arthur H. Forbush of Boston was injured while test driving a car in Brattleboro Vermont. He is about 30 and connected with Wiggin & Elwell stock brokers of 53 State Street Boston. The injuries may prove fatal.
Jacob G Ullery owned a six cylinder car shown by Mr Forbush in Brattleboro. While Ullery spoke with someone at Spofford Lake Chesterfield N H the car was driven up a road and fell 10 feet landing upside down. Forbush was found unconscious and later revived but his condition was listed as critical awaiting hospital treatment.
Arthur H. Forbush a week with Wiggin & Elwell at 53 State Street was seriously injured in a car accident in Brattleboro last night. He was a bond department clerk and had just left for a country visit. The firm arranged aid and his father departed on the 11 16 express to Brattleboro after the accident was learned. Forbush was single.
Philadelphia defeats Cleveland 5 to 0 and Detroit edges Washington 3 to 1 to bolster standings. Red Sox face St. Louis with Jake Stahl sidelined by an eye injury. Cubs beat Boston Doves 8 to 5. Pirates topple Philadelphia 4 to 3, Cincinnati 11 to 3 over New York, Brooklyn 1 to 32 in 11 innings at St. Louis. Strang sets 100 mile auto record. McLoughlin wins California interscholastic tennis title.
President Taft will become the first U.S. chief executive to leave the country during his term. He accepted an Oct. 16 invitation to visit Mexican territory and exchange visits with President Diaz at El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, via the Mexican ambassador.

Motorman Harry B. Tuck and Conductor Joseph L. St. German, both from Webster, along with four passengers, were slightly injured in a rear-end trolley collision at North Oxford when an air brake failed. Tuck suffered internal injuries and is feared to die. A panicked rush followed the impact as two crowded trolleys collided.
The Fuller prohibition bill clears the Alabama Senate by 25 to 6. It bans liquor possession except in homes and requires the accused to prove innocence before evidence. It criminalizes saloons in advertising, bars liquor ads, and treats federal liquor licenses as prima facie guilt. The measure heads to law on Monday.

In Lexington near the Arlington reservoir two Roxbury youths, Max Freedman 14 and Andrew Sullivan 13, drowned during a church picnic at the Old Swimming Hole. Sullivan sank first as Freedman leaped to rescue him, both others watching unable to help.
Charles Newman led a Sunday school day out from Roxbury to Lexington with Sun day school boys. The group enjoyed a country break at Hibbard Hill then grew tired as they faced the long return home and another year until they could visit the grass and trees again.
Former Mayor Fitzgerald spent a busy first day ashore at the Bingville party in Houghs Neck dancing with many women and greeting friends. He arrived by big auto before facing 1500 attendees, received a long ovation, and avoided political references in his speech.
