Poor Water Supply at Putnam Co Fire on Congress Street

The 12 inch main on Congress Street supplied about 3500 gallons per minute with several hydrants either dead ended or in use for multiple engines. Fire Commissioner Fitch blamed delays in facility upgrades, while City Engineer Jackson described plans for a larger B Street main and a new 20 inch Swett Street main to improve future service. Citizens mourn the impact on shopkeepers, workers, and families in the affected district as strikers and displaced workers face hardship.
