The Damper Safe and Iron Works Company has leased a large West End building in Boston for temporary use during repairs. They will begin operations this week and seek new orders.
A list of steamers arriving or sailing Aug 19 from multiple ports including Boston Baltimore New York and Philadelphia with vessels such as White Squadron Virginian Garry Teutonic and Spree reported. Other ships depart or arrive at Hamburg Bremen Amsterdam and London with cargoes and routes noted.
An advertisement touts Elite Kentucky Whiskey as a calorie and muscle builder. Bottled product sold sealed through Choate Drug and Medical Co and a network of Boston area merchants including Bowdoin Square, Washington Street, Main Street and East Boston locations. First class hotels, grocers and druggists are listed as sellers.
New York August 19 the Teutonic of the White Star line arrived claiming the fastest ocean crossing to date beating the Majestic by about two hours. Captain P J Irving praised the ship while noting favorable winds and a near two thousand seven hundred eighty mile log. The voyage featured three 500 mile days and a 517 mile sprint before docking at Sandy Hook lightship.
The second day of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen regatta featured tight junior singles racing with Wright of Toronto edging Fleming and Berry for second as Fleming held off Dyer. The Dempseys won the four oared juniors, while the Atalantas beat Neptune and Arlington in the junior fours. The senior singles saw Hedley fade, with Higgins, Caffrey, and Healey posting top heats and finish order. The double sculls finals favored the Albanys with Vesper and Varuna behind, and the eight-oared race ended in a NY Athletic Club victory over the Atalantas, with Columbia third and Fairmount fourth. Time 7:47 1-5.
Aug 19 Lowe Republicans gathered at the headquarters to back Charles H. Allen for Governor. Ex-Councilman A G Walsh chaired a unanimous resolution praising his past service and urging Republican convention nomination. Ratification speeches followed from J F Kimball LF Trull A G Swapp Rep F N Weir and others. Three cheers closed the meeting led by Major E J Noyes.
In Pawtucket on Park Street Mrs. James Lyons was shot three times by her husband as she sat with a baby in her arms. The burning powder ignited the child's clothing and the woman died instantly. The suspect, her husband, was arrested.
Newport Aug 19 Vice Commodore E D Morgan owner of the Gloriana is in poor health and has given up active yachting for the present. He prepared the cruising schooner Constellation for winter quarters and it is unlikely the Gloriana will be seen in racing trim again this season.
Washington August 19 The United States general appraiser in charge at New York has been instructed to detail a general appraiser to proceed to Boston to conduct reappraisement proceedings in appeal cases involving the proper classification of fish hooks earthenware etc.
The Pennsylvania Republican State Convention opened at the Grand Opera House with about 500 in attendance. Henry Hall was elected temporary chair man, and John P. Elkins became permanent chair man after a 2:25 p.m. reassembly. The platform praised Blaine and Harrison, endorsed tariff and silver stances, pledged reform and an honest ballot, and supported veterans. General D. McM. Gregg and Morrison were nominated for Auditor General and State Treasurer respectively, with adjournment sine die at 5 p.m.
In Augham South Shore Agri Cultural Hall residents staged a mock criminal trial over Postmaster George Cushing accused of stealing Ebed L Ripley's rooster. Ex-Governor Long served as judge, while the proceeds benefit Edwin Humphrey Post 104 G A R relief fund.
The Post’s Aug 8 exclusive on a Dress Reform Club proposing to march in short skirts and top boots on the first rainy Saturday in October has been widely copied by national papers. Town Topics prints verse on the matter and even a Boston daily admits there is substance to the story. The lengthy piece mirrors the Post’s original report from two weeks earlier.
Exeter New Hampshire Aug 19 four Italians who murderedly assaulted Officer Edmund Thurston at a brick yard were arrested in Plaistow by Exeter officers and the sheriff. They resisted and ran but surrendered after two were shot. They were brought to Exeter and jailed. Thurston's condition is very serious and delirious. Thurston, a twenty year Exeter officer, is highly regarded.
Washington report says only that a plan to extend the railroad's floating debt was proposed. No details are known at the Commissioner of Railroads office, and the official is temporarily absent. The government reportedly would object if such a scheme increased fixed charges or harmed security.
SPECIAL to the Post from Providence August 19 reports the Blackstone Valley mills operating on short time due to a drouth. Demand remains steady but water in the river and ponds is very low across the basin, delaying full production until rain restores supplies.
Vermont marks the Bennington battle centennial with a grand procession and the dedication of a massive monument. President Harrison attends, with greetings from Governors Page and Massachusetts and New Hampshire officials.
The Hon. Wheelock G. Veazey, President of the Day, presides over a twofold event in Bennington. A dedication ceremony for a monument is planned, followed by additional observances. Local officials and residents attend to mark the occasion.
