Robbers fire at North Providence home assault inmates

Thieves entered the Angell residence near Manton in North Providence around 1 am. Mrs Brown, visiting daughter, was choked. Mrs Angell was shot in the chest and shoulder while Mr Angell narrowly escaped as the robbers fled after smashing doors and windows. Neighbors and officers aided the injured. doctors treated them, and High Sheriff Holden pledged full pursuit of the culprits.

Failure of Wheat Corner Sinks Chicago Market Leader

J B Lyon & Co the originators and principal managers of the wheat corner have failed. About twenty other individuals and firms are said unable to meet obligations though many may afterward. A prominent operator demanded margins of 100000 while only 2500 was called back. Losses on the operation risk at least 100000. Board of Trade members fault the corner’s conduct for luring brokers to ruin. Hugh Maher listed among those said to have failed. Open Board showed firmness with prices up 2 to 3 cents, close 1 15 cash or seller August, 1 14 seller September. Receipts 590 cars.

Bold jail escape by four inmates from county jail

In Chicago four young men escaped last night after a prisoner gained the cell keys and, with revolvers supplied by outside friends, forced the deputy to surrender. The escapees, three awaiting trial for robbery and one serving two years for attempted killing a policeman, were at large and likely to be recaptured.

At Saratoga N Y on August 20 the first race for two year olds at three quarters of a mile carried 1100 dollars and was won by Count D Orsay with a time of 1 19. The second race for three year olds at one and a half miles carried 500 dollars and was won by Experience Oaks in 1 57. The third race a free handicap for all ages at one mile saw Mary Louise beat Frank Hampton by a short head with Arizona third at Frank Hamp ton saddle girt. Defender was beaten. Time 3 minutes.

A small Baptist meeting-house at Appenaug in Providence, owned by the colored church, was burned by an incendiary this morning. Loss estimated at 2000 dollars. Local authorities investigate as fire rages through the church's family and worship space.
