Police clashed with laborers on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford as Chief Mason and a squad fired revolvers. Two strike leaders named Silva and Ewsbanero were among those involved in yesterday's confrontation.
Aug 18 Lynn reports a double drowning after a violent exercise near Nahant bath house. Alonzo Leandrin, 19, mechanic of 11 Cheever Place, and Alfred LaBlanc, 25, shoe cutter of Littlefield Block, both unmarried, entered surf and were carried out about 10 feet deep, 200 yards from shore.
Police officer John H. Clinton, on vacation in Nahant, alerted Superintendent Anderson and lifeguards after two men Le Blanc and Leandrin entered the water despite cautions. Both were expert swimmers and disappeared after one attempted to assist the other. Bodies recovered about 40 feet from shore.

Chief Henry W. Mason tells the Post there will be no shots fired to intimidate strikers. He says revolver discharges will be aimed only at those breaking the law and that today’s firing in the air was not directed by him.
New Bedford faces one of its worst strikes in years as construction halts and contracts worth thousands are delayed. About 2500 workers are idle while police clash with ~1100 strikers in the morning, with shots fired in the air to intimidate protesters.
Chief Mason ordered officers to protect laborers on building jobs after strikers tried to stop workers at the Sharpe Mill and other sites. In a morning clash, two strikers were arrested as officers moved laborers along to avoid further trouble.
A yegg gang raided Yarmouth Barnstable and West Barnstable early today. They entered the United States custom house post offices and Cummaquid Golf Club and blew Parker's general store with nitroglycerine before escaping on a stolen handcar to Sagamore and catching the 6:35 train to Boston. Deputy Sheriff Maloney and Post Office Inspector Jennings aid the search. two men seen by Barnstable blacksmith Fred Kent are believed responsible.
The duo emerged in women's skirts from the Barn stable post office, fled by handcar after failing to open the safe and stealing stamps and cash. Kent heard footsteps along Railroad avenue and watched the masked pair vanish. The Yarmouth crime spree continued with raids on Commaquid Golf Club and the post office and custom house in the same building, taking golf balls and clubs.
In addition to regular schedule, limited cars leave Park Square on weekdays hourly from 6 a m to 6 p m. Fare 55 cents. Round trip one dollar.
Night Watchman Joseph Levy was found dying with a skull fracture in the Hotel Somerset fireroom. Night Engineer William Lacey, who fled his post, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill after the injury occurred during a hidden confrontation while guests dined above.
Closing hours of the NRA meet at Camp Perry Ohio saw two world records shattered under wind and rain. Clarence L. Sturtevant led the Leech match with 24 bullseyes at 1000 yards, besting a 1908 mark by Captain K K V Casey. In the President's match Sergeant W A Fragner set a record score of 283, with a top group of ten leaders listed by service branch and rank.
In St. Louis Aug 18 a man claiming to be John H Robinson of Boston had his beard pulled by Grant M Curtis of Buffalo hailed as the Rockefeller of the poultry world. The incident sparked uproar at the American Poultry Association convention and a graft investigation is expected over the selection of chicken models for the association’s official book.

Patrolman Martin Haverty of Station 6 South Boston was assaulted by a gang while arresting Coleman Donaghue. Donaghue fled, with warrants outstanding for multiple charges including a recent assault on officers. Police believe he leads a gang terrorizing South Boston and the South End.
Patrolman Haverty arrests Donaghue on West Second Street near Dorchester Street. A crowd surrounds the patrol box as Donaghue's friends urge release. Attackers strike Haverty with a club breaking his thumb and forcing release after a violent scuffle.
The Roosevelt campaign announces he will run in 1912 directing efforts to win the presidency. He argues Taft aides support rival standouts and misrepresent his policies while he vows to confront the anti-Roosevelt bloc within the Republican ranks. He contends Taft tacitly backs the opposition and insists he is the sole beacon for Roosevelt ideas.
Colonel Roosevelt backs the progressive Republicans and says he will not attack Taft unless forced by the readers to take a stand. He vows to sacrifice personal friendship if necessary to uphold his principles from the last decade.
Inspectors Gleavey Pelton Linton and Laughlin uncovered a plan to rob the Boston and Maine railroad and a leading woolen merchant. Two arrests followed with more expected. About $2500 currently involved. scheme aimed to divert $50,000 worth of silk to Boston.
William Potter and John H. O Neil, both 33 and 32, East Boston teamsters, are jailed as detectives recover 14 wool rolls totaling 700 yards in a Meridian street tailoring shop. A mill employee linked to the fraud is under surveillance. stock takes Sept. 1 may reveal his absence. Earlier, three cloth rolls were found in a local tailor shop as police prepped charges.
