Brigadier General Edwards assumes command of a New England division at Charlotte North Carolina and will lead troops to France. Brigadier General Cole accompanies as brigade commander while Brigadier General Sweetser oversees supplies in the unit.
Allied forces drive the German army from Langemarck and other positions in Flanders. More than 1800 German prisoners counted as the nine mile Ypres front yields broad gains on the front. German resistance was stubborn but suffered heavy losses as the allies secure most gains.

Miss Millie Tilestone of Dorchester on Quincy Hospital dangerous list after a crash on Quincy avenue near Faxon road. She rode with Miss Lillian Johnson of Arlington Heights when their auto collided with an electric car bound for Quincy square. Dense bushes hid the speeding electric. Tilestone was thrown, suffering a fractured skull and other injuries, while Johnson was unhurt.
Provincetown workers distribute money and food to ten households left fatherless by the storm that killed nineteen fishermen. The Beach Combers club voted $100 from last night’s chanty fund for immediate relief at the committee’s discretion.
Lloyd George in the House of Commons reported Britain is rapidly reducing Uboat losses and gaining the upper hand against the submarine menace. He noted food stores are larger than a year ago with wheat up 31 percent and cultivated acreage up by a million acres, asserting England will not face famine with reasonable public economy.

He also allegedly attempted to sail from port on a Swedish vessel but was blocked by the secret service.
London reports from August 16 show German casualties in the official lists, not all occurring in July, totaling 89,863. The breakdown includes 9,000 killed or died of wounds, 60,000 wounded, and 13,896 severely wounded, with prisoners or missing also noted. The war's total German casualties since it began exceed 4.5 million.
