Malden Mass August 16 A young man Edward Holden of South Boston drowned while canoeing on Spot pond Stoneham A large party witnessed the incident and tried to save him but he was found lifeless and his body sent to his home.
Washington reports on the Adams Express contract for 5,000,000 silver dollars transport from New Orleans to Washington and possible breach actions, plus Civil Service Commission interference, Keiley case, Endicott navy order rumors denied, and moves on transportation bonds, cattle men, and Boomers prosecutions.
In Anderson Pennsylvania a track foreman, Thomas Crepps, was attacked by two tramps near Longfellow to Granville. They tied him to the rails, robbed him of his money and watch, and he freed himself just as a freight train approached, losing a little finger in the escape. Dozens of tramps were arrested but the culprits remained at large.
Dispatches from Mapario and Paris report escalating cholera across Spain with 1706 new cases and 1758 deaths on Saturday, Barcelona and Granada hardest hit, plus 60,000 dead and mass evacuations. In Marseilles 27 deaths today, quarantine imposed on a British steamer after a cholera death onboard.
Washington reports Gen S S Burdette says veterans at Gettysburg and Springfield favor placing a Grant memorial in the capital. He notes a general order will announce the project and that the exact site in Washington will be decided later. He rejects funding a monument on Grant's grave and calls for a distinctive Grand Army monument funded by members.

John Stetson announced Mikado to open Thursday at Fifth Avenue theatre but manager Duff countered with a rival production same night. The Aurania brought D OyIe y Carte and London company. after talks with Carte, Stetson moved to open on Wednesday night.
Bridgeport Aug 16 A wealthy farmer John Banks four miles from the city was fleeced of 3000 by a well dressed Texan claiming to be a wool dealer. Baldwin baited with a card game, produced bonds to cover bets, and the tramp seized both money and bonds before fleeing.
Pilgrims from Troy and Amsterdam gathered at the Auriesville shrine in Canajoharie County New York to honor Father Isaac Jogues and Catharine Toyzik. About 1400 people attended an 18 hour service with communion and a procession by church societies and bands. The shrine honors Indian martyrdom and the Lily of the Mohawk, Catherine Toyzi. Prominent priests from New York attended with Father Langcoke delivering the address and Father Weyrick the sermon. Regular pilgrimages are expected to follow annually drawing Catholics statewide.

Maxwell, the suspected Carthen Preller murderer, reached St Louis from San Francisco in police custody. A 2000 to 3000 crowd greeted the depot. In New York on August 16 Julius Wolffe and Fritz Fien, German sailors from the bark Mozart at Brooklyn, fought after drinking. Wolffe stabbed Fien after an attempted restraint, then was killed when Fien opened a long abdominal wound. Fien survived hospital care, condition unclear.
In Concord New Hampshire on August 16 a Lake Sunapee Spiritualist camp meeting drew about 5000 attendees with excursion trains from Concord and Claremont. Forenoon speakers included Mrs J Yean of Leominster Massachusetts and Mrs Addie M Stevens of Claremont. Afternoon lectures featured Dr H B Stover of Boston and Joseph D Stiles of Weymouth gave a test seance.
Hartford August 16 burglars robbed the house of H. S. Chamberlain while the family was away and thoroughly ransacked the premises. No clue to the burglars was found.
In Palatka Florida Lydia Brown and Laura Lovelace two mulatto women who pursued Justin Marks a Silver Springs barber fought seven rounds with bare fists at a picnic. as men friends of the rivals drew razors a duel was planned for Wednesday with one man near death and another badly wounded. both women were bruised with minor blood loss.

The main hurdle is opposition from French Canadian doctors to vaccination, despite health authorities' efforts and clergy beginning to support immunization. Lorenzo Bicrele club members guided the group through city points of interest before they depart Kingston tomorrow morning with 17 riders remaining.
Toronto reporters say government officers returned from Biscatasing on Lake Superior. Four members of the whiskey gang are committed for trial for assaulting officers, 13 jailed for liquor law violations, and several hundred gallons of liquor destroyed. The ringleaders escaped.
In Washington on August 16 Addison Coleman a notorious thief and desperado was killed when an officer's revolver discharged during a struggle as Coleman resisted arrest and tried to turn the weapon on the officer. The accidental gunfire ended the pursuit almost instantly.
Detroit report states Tim Finan of Manistee defeated Pat McHugh of Fond du Lac in a 17 round bout. The prizefight occurred today in Manistee and lasted one hour and thirty minutes.
