James Tumblety appeared before Justice Terry at Hyde Park Wednesday on larceny charges for a coat taken from James Powers of East Dedham and was held to appear at the superior court in 300 bail. A barge accident on Lafayette street Salem Tuesday night injured Frank Treffrey with a broken leg and William White with internal injuries. both men from Marblehead received care at Salem hospital. William Thomas died at Somerville police station Wednesday afternoon from liquor exhaustion, previously living in Medford. he was 45, of medium height with a dark complexion, dressed in dark clothes.

L Meyer & Co a general store at El Paso Texas and Tucson Arizona is assigned with liabilities of 116000. Stock in Tucson estimated at 70000 and in El Paso at 50000. M Fassiier and a Columbus shoe dealer has failed. Edward J Perry a Worcester druggist will settle in insolvency.
Dr Garnett of Washington returned from York Pa where Judge Jere Black lies ill. He received three telegrams requesting his immediate presence and departed for York to reach the judge by eight this evening.
The Newsdealer's and Stationers' union held its annual picnic at Downer Landing. A folding contest with 500 papers staged by five men failed to produce a winner and will be repeated in Boston in a few days.
Troy report states Thomas G. Hunt, New York merchant, who disappeared and was later said to be in Cambridge England, has not returned to Elizabethtown County New York. He claims no knowledge of his whereabouts and provides no repentance about his movements.

Albert Anderson, a light mulatto, stabbed Charles Marshall, also a mulatto, at a sixth ward Republican primary voting site in Cincinnati. Marshall accused Anderson of keeping his name off the ticket and drew a knife before Anderson struck, killing Marshall en route to the hospital.

Wednesday brought stronger strength, regular drills for ninth and fifth regiments, and an 3 P.M. inspection by Adjt. Gen. Dalton. Health was good, but a boxing incident led to arrests and a tent wreck by an unruly horse. Governor may visit by Saturday.
Go at Watkans N Y Aug 15 Hanlan of Toronto won the professional race three miles and a turn in 21 09 three lengths ahead Hosmer second and Ross a good third. Hosmer led early with Lee and Ross close with the wind and waves challenging. The crowd of 10 000 waited as the race started at 5 30 after a delayed start.
L W Johnson the telegraph operator was arrested at Hoosick Falls after an inquest into a Troy Petersburg Junction wreck that killed six. He pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter in the second degree charge and was remanded for bail.
Richmond August 15 The Republican straight out convention meets in Richmond and adopts a platform endorsing Blaine for president. It condemns Mahone’s use of debt repudiation power, calls for civil service reform, honest enforcement of federal acts, a free ballot, and an honest count, while opposing mixed schools.
All members of the late Baltimore fire commission presented by the grand jury for malfeasance appeared in court or by counsel. They posted $3,000 bail each for appearance. Samuel W. Register, president, was en route to San Francisco for a Knights Templars conclave. Public reaction remains heated and critical across political lines.
Detroit August 15. The prohibition state convention met at Eaton Rapids and voted to raise 100000 for the campaign fund. It endorsed the national Chicago platform and urged constitutional and statutory prohibition while condemning the republicans for bad faith in not submitting the liquor question to the people and claiming the party is incompetent to handle the issue.

A Boston Post representative rode the 20 hour Minneapolis to Chicago Pullman with the regatta party of Hanlan Teemer Riley Lee Plaisted and Hosmer returning from Lake Minnetonka to Watkin’s Glen New York. The group included Hanlan’s brother in law Robert A Sutherland and Teemer’s trainer Barnard Morris. Teemer, 19, McKeesport Pa, tall and athletic with classic features, is praised by Hanlan as a future champion and admired for his frank, honest nature. Teemer’s father is German and mother French and religious, shaping his good character and physique. rumors of dissipation are denied.
The Bostons beat the Philadelphias 9 to 4 as strong hitting at the start and late offense carried the game. Sutton, Whitney, Wise, and Hornung produced key hits including a home run by Whitney and a late three-base blast by Sutton, while Ferguson starred at second and Ringo's catching was outstanding. Philadelphians managed two runs early and a tying double by Purcell sparked a brief rally, but Boston's defense limited them to one run after the first inning.
